Is the mummy of Cleopatra buried in Paris?

Given that Hawass is currently looking for her in Egypt I don't suppose that this particular theory will be terribly popular in some quarters.

Cleopatra VII, the great Cleopatra, the big nose of geopolitical power, is in Paris. It is a matter of justice, because what would be better for a woman like her? Specifically, she is buried in the gardens of the National Library of France, at its old headquarters of the Rue Vivienne, near the Louvre and the Palais Royal. That is what Juan Angel Torti, former Chilean journalist and possibly the most elegant retiree in Paris, has been sustaining for years. This former reporter for Agence France-Presse, whose headquarters is a stone’s throw from where the Egyptian queen supposedly lies, looks forward to the moment when archaeologists reach access to the end of the 120 meters long tunnel at the temple of Tabusiris Magna, 50 kilometers from Alexandria, where the sarcophagi of Cleopatra and Marco Antonio are allegedly located. That is expected to happen later this year, as announced by the Egyptian authorities. But Torti is certain they are in for a big disappointment: “The tomb of Cleopatra is empty.”

Demotic Egyptian

The chronologically penultimate variety of the Egyptian language is known as Demotic. Demotic is the most cursive script developed by the Egyptians. This stage of the language has, in many ways, connections to the preceding stage, Late Egyptian, and its successor, Coptic. Despite these affinities, demotic is a complete separated stage of ancient Egyptian language.

The Practical Guide to the Grammar of Egyptian Demotic is a learning tool for those who wants to start the study of the late stage ancient Egyptian language in a highly cursive script known as Demotic. Travel: The fantastic chaos of Cairo

When one hears the word ‘Cairo’, one immediately thinks pyramids, mummies, camels and a whole lot of sand. While this is true, Cairo has so much more to offer than these antiquities. With its countless bazaars, wide range of Middle Eastern cuisine, and beautiful mosques, Cairo is a place where a myriad of discoveries can be made.

As the Lonely Planet guide says: “it is where the ancient and modern mix furiously.” And the mixing sure is furious. When visitors first arrive in the city, the first thing that they should be struck with is the hustle, bustle and erratic madness of the city. The best way for visitors to explore this fantastic chaos is to jump in a cab. By Western standards, taxis in Cairo are relatively cheap and get travellers from A to B without the crush of public transport.

Of course, one of the many things that visitors must do when visiting Cairo is to pay their respects to Pharaoh Tutankhamen in the Valley of Kings, but for visitors spending their day in the city, they can also experience a bit of this great King. Even though he is the only Egyptian Pharaoh to be still living in his original resting place, the present home of his fabulous gold Death Mask is the Egyptian Museum, which is always filled with visitors. So any time would be best to have a look at not just Tutankhamen’s gold death mask, but also the Royal Mummy Room, and a wide range of treasures from the Egyptian past.

Travel: Traveling through Egypt

Hidden from the hubbub of the streets we were witness to mesmerising Sufi whirling - a show of drumming, chanting and dancing in a hypnotic twirling meditation. The ritual had the audience entranced as the drummers beat a constant rhythm to which colourfully costumed men revolved on the spot continually in a smooth and controlled display of discipline and athleticism, their robes projecting into brilliantly patterned disks. The crowd went wild.

There's a lot to see in Egypt and most of it is well worth seeing. Lately, scuba diving in the Red Sea at Sharm el Sheikh is fast becoming the thing to do, aided by convenient direct flights from London on various "budget" airlines. But my fascination with Egypt has always been in the pyramids and the Nile. And I wasn't disappointed.

Driving to Giza, just over the river from Cairo, one can make out the pyramids from a distance, despite the air pollution. They're enormous. How this was constructed by humans alone is almost mind-boggling, but we were assured that, at that time, the Nile banks came close to the base of the structures, and 100 000 men would work on each pyramid. Heavy going nonetheless.

The age of all the tombs and temples we saw during the week was astonishing.

Ancient royal burial ground found in Egypt: report

Archaeologists have uncovered ancient wooden coffins in what appears to be a royal burial ground near the necropolis of Abydos in southern Egypt, the state-run MENA news agency reported overnight.

The agency said that the discovery, made by a team from the Supreme Council of Egyptian Antiquities, could be dated back to the Old Kingdom (3,000 BC) - the golden age of pyramid building in ancient times.

The team "has found what could be a royal complex of 13 tombs of different shapes and sizes that could have belonged to high officials from that period or people who contributed to building these tombs," MENA said.

The agency said that human bones were found inside the coffins, although it did not specify how many coffins were discovered.

Objects made out of ivory similar to pieces used for playing chess were also found.

MENA said only one other similar board game has been found in Egypt and that was among the fabled treasures of the legendary boy king Tutankhamun.

The discovery of Tutankhamun's intact tomb by British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922 near Luxor in southern Egypt caused an international sensation because of the value and quality of its contents.

Discrepancies in deciphering and translation?

In a recent interview with Al-Masry Al Youm Dr. Osama Al-Saadawi claimed there have been discrepancies in deciphering and translating the Pharaonic languages. As a result, the image of Ancient Egyptians has been skewed.

“The French icon Champollion made serious mistakes when translating the Rosetta stone because he relied on assumptions that led him to incorrect translations, and thus the language is not right,” Al-Saadawi said. “As a result we have a misconception of life during Pharaonic times.”

Al-Saadawi claims that only 10 percent of the deciphered hieroglyphics is correct. However, Egyptologists such as researcher and lecturer Ahmed Seddik say that errors in Champollion’s work were a result of minimal technical resources.

Noting that there are mistakes in the first hand-written translations that could have led to wrong assumptions, Seddik said that “Champollion’s work was highly refined and very well translated, and we have been able to unlock the language, the phonetic school of ancient Egypt because of it.”

Among Al-Saadawi’s finds is a discrepancy in the name of the Pharaoh who built the larges of the Giza Pyramids. According to him, his name was not King “Khufu,” but King “Ghonoom.” But according to Seddik, a graduate of the American University in Cairo, both are correct.

“Every pharaoh had at least five names,” he said. “Khufu is a nickname. Ghonoom Khoufi was another name. Ghonoom means protect, so it’s literally ‘Protect Khufu.’”

It is finally happening, the housing bubble created by builders, speculators and municipalities has deflated. Given that construction is one of the main engines of the Spanish economy, the slowdown has been felt. Nor is the first time in history that the channels of economic construction become one of the most important economic assets. After all, that is what happened in ancient Egypt.

Egypt was always an agricultural society, whose prosperity depended almost exclusively on the river Nile and its annual flood. The construction of the first pyramid (Djoser in Saqqara) ultimately defined what would be the three main economic circuits of the Old Kingdom. The first we might call “general” , because it was designed to obtain the resources to maintain the state and support the actual construction of royal monuments. The second was a more specific circuit, as its role was to maintain the supplies for daily worship (theoretically eternal) that took place in the temples of the pyramids. The last of the circuits was essentially a redistributor and involved offerings and the staff of the temple. We, therefore can see that all three circuits created the economic foundations that allowed the pharaoh to keep the state structure upright and enabled him to implement those projects and public works believed necessary.

CRE X

The update from the organizers of CRE was one of those emails which talks about the revamped website but doesn't send you the link! Never mind - it turned up on Google straight away. I don't usually cover conferences because EEF is the best place to find out that sort of info, but CRE is a worthy cause so here's the gist.

CRE is an extremely positive and unthreatening environment for those engaged in research to share their ideas, engage in dialogue and meet people with similar interests. This year CRE will be taking place on the 7th-9th January 2009. The deadline for papers is 14th September 2008, so if you are intending to present at the conference you will need to submit your abstract by then.

An interesting enhancement to the CRE offering this year is the addition of some talks on professional development for proto Egyptologists including how to build a C.V., how to go about getting published, developing interview techniques etc, for those who might be interested. They have asked both academics and publishers to give their insights into these areas in a seminar-style presentation and there has been some very enthusiastic feedback. If you have suggestions about any topics that you might like to see covered let the organizers know.

Changes have been made to the website, including the logo, in an attempt to make the site more user friendly, and to give people the opportunity to find out more about CRE and its purpose. A plan for the near future is to add links which will allow conference visitors to book accommodation, flights, trains etc. The booking form for the conference itself will also be available online. The plan is to add a Paypal payment option for paying the conference fee.

Egypt, Italy sign protocol to set up center for renovation antiquities

"Egypt and Italy sign in October a protocol whereby a first Egyptian-Italian center will be set up in old Cairo for renovation of ancient antiquities," Minister of Culture Farouq Hosni said Saturday 1/8/2008.

The protocol will be signed by the ministers of culture of the two countries on the sidelines of a visit to Egypt by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, Hosni said.

Following his return from Italy's Turin city where he opened the renovated Egyptian Museum (Musee Egizio Di Torinio) Hosni added his visit to Turin was a landmark visit due to the importance of the occasion, which saw the renovation of the Egyptian museum and in view of the close ties between the two countries.

He added that he discussed with his Italian opposite number Sandro Bondi means of promoting cooperation in the cultural field.


Egypt gets 3000-year-old statue back from Dutch

Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities says it has retrieved from the Netherlands a small pharaonic funerary statue — over 3,000 years old and known as an ushebti — dating back to the 19th Dynasty.

The Council says in a statement Monday that the statue was found in 1985 by Dutch and British archaeologists in Saqqara, but was stolen from a nearby storehouse.

A Dutch businessman later bought it and took it to a museum in the city of Leiden to confirm its value. There, he was told the statue was stolen. Dutch authorities ruled to hand it back to Egypt.

The faience statue is 85 millimeters, or 3.35 inches high, with hieroglyphic inscriptions. Ushebtis are figurines, dozens of which were sometimes buried in a tomb to help the dead in the afterlife.

Kids Journey Back In Time To Discover Secrets Of Egyptian Royal Beetles

A dung beetle may not conjure up images of prosperity, protection and luck, but for the ancient Egyptians, these scarabs were an intrinsic part of everyday life and beyond.

The Jackson branch of the Ocean County Library held an interactive program this week, journeying back thousands of years ago for kids to see how these sacred insects were as much a part of the Egyptian culture as the pyramids or Sphinx.

With the library celebrating its kids' summer "Reading Bug" theme, the Egyptian program seemed like a natural fit, said Emily Franklin, the Jackson branch children's librarian.

"I was thinking what could we do for older kids with bugs that would be fun?" said Franklin, "and then it was like, 'I know, how about scarabs?'"

Franklin said the Jackson branch is very lucky to have principal library assistant Linda English onboard to conduct the program, saying she "loves all things Egyptian" and has been intrigued by the ancient culture for years.

While the program was entitled "Royal Beetles of Egypt," English said it was actually a bit of a misnomer.

"Not only did royalty have scarabs, but everybody had scarabs in ancient Egypt," said English.

Free Academic Articles Get Read But Don't Generate More Citations

When academic articles are "open access" or free online, they get read more often, but they don't -- going against conventional wisdom -- get cited more often in academic literature, finds a new Cornell study.

The reason, suggest Cornell graduate student Philip Davis and colleagues, including three Cornell professors, is that most researchers probably already have all the access they need to relevant articles.

"It appears that higher quality articles -- in other words, more citable articles -- are simply made freely available," said Davis. "Previous studies using different methods simply got cause and effect reversed." The study is published online in the British Medical Journal and will be published in the print edition Aug. 9.

The findings are particularly relevant to academic researchers, because the frequency with which a researcher's work is cited can be a factor in tenure and promotion decisions.

The researchers conducted the first controlled study of open-access publishing, randomly making some journal articles freely available while keeping others available by subscription only, to determine whether increased access to journal articles results in more article downloads and citations.

Dating the Predynastic for beginners - Part 2

As previously, all constructive criticism gratefully received! Many thanks for the comments in response to Part 1. Once I have all the comments I'll update both posts and put them somewhere on the web as a single document.

The topic of relative dating was dealt with in Part 1, a previous post. A relative sequence was available for the period between the Badarian and the period when unification was thought to have taken place. However, although this sequence has formed the framework for all other sequences, no calander dates were available. The only date which was relevant was the proposed date of 3000 BC for the unification of Egypt. Apart from the fact that the Predynastic predated it, we would not be any the wiser about exact ages of these periods if it was not for radiocarbon dating.

I said that the major sources of confusion for that system were that

  • Two sets of terminology are still in use for Upper Egypt (Amratian = Naqada I and Gerzean = Naqada II)
  • Petrie’s original sequence has been refined several times and a number of different schemes exist. Although Kaiser’s 1956 and 1990 versions are the most commonly used, it is rare that an author will say which scheme is in use
  • Before radiocarbon dating it was impossible to know exactly how long these periods lasted, and how old they extended back to
  • A different set of terms is used to describe the technology and tradition of Lower Egypt during the Upper Egyptian periods of the Badarian, Naqada I and Naqada II., with which they were contemporary
  • Contemporary prehistoric cultures outside the Nile Valley in Egypt are usually treated completely separately, although there is often chronological overlap with the Badarian.
  • Dynasty 00 and Dynasty 0 are terms which cause a lot of confusion

The matter was particularly highlighted on the course by discussion about the date given for a newly discovered site in the Faiyum Depression, currently under excavation by UCLA. The site is near the Roman town of Karanis and apparently bears a very strong resemblance to the Faiyum A or Faiyum Neolithic sites which were found on the north short of Lake Qarun by Gertrude Caton Thompson and Elinor Gardiner in the 1920s. The Faiyum Neolithic is dated to 5450-4400BC. The new date which has appeared in a number of news articles for the new site is 7000BCE, which puts it more or less on a par with the previous occupation which are associated with an entirely Epipalaeolithic (hunting, gathering and fishing) industry known as the Qarunian which is dated to c.7050BC. This date clearly challenges quite a few assumptions if it is to be accepted. The UCLA team are currently preparing a report for the SCA and cannot release any data without the SCA‘s sanction, as per the SCA’s regulations. However, we will hopefully hear more details in the future about whether the date is a one-off or whether it is the average of a series of dates, and where the sample from which it was taken came from. But the discussion about that one date opened up the whole chronological can of worms.

I am going to focus on radiocarbon dating because it is the one used most frequently, and the one which seems to generate the most misunderstandings, but I will mention other relevant techniques at the end.

So what actually is radiocarbon dating? Radiocarbon dating (also written as Carbon 14, 14C or C14) was invented by Willard Libby in 1949. Carbon 14 is an unstable isotope which exists in the atmosphere with other isotopes and is absorbed by all living things (plant and animal). Because it is unstable it begins to decay at the time of the death of the organism that absorbed it. The rate of decay is regular and can Libby was able to measure this rate using a Geiger counter. Libby calculated how long it took for half of any carbon 14 in a sample to decay (it’s so-called “half life”). He also estimated that atmospheric levels of carbon 14 would remain the same throughout time. He realized that if this was the case the rate of decay of carbon 14 could be used on samples from ancient contexts to date those contexts. The organic materials on which it can be used include wood, charcoal, bone (but not cremated bone), plant remains, skin, etc. However, a sample must be at least 10g for wood and charcoal to be dated and at least 100g for bone. Of course one of the problems experienced by archaeologists is that it is not always possible to obtain a sample of this size (a point made by Dirk Huyge in his rock art lecture). Radiocarbon dates have a practical use in terms of reliability for samples which are between 200 and 10,000 years old. Reliability decreases after 10,000 years ago and becomes unusable for practical purposes after 40,000 years ago.

When Libby first released the details of his technique he caused a sensation, because for the first time archaeologists were able to obtain real calendar dates for artefacts and sites, rather than trying to fit them into often clumsy relative frameworks. Many of these frameworks were found to be too old or too young, and the face of archaeology was changed forever.

Radiocarbon dates are always allocated a unique laboratory reference which shows an abbreviated form of the laboratory’s name and the number assigned to the sample. Some academic publications are kind enough to add the lab reference which makes it easy to double check them or find out more information about the sample used. Many, however, do not. A typical lab code would be GrN-54432

Radocarbon dates are always expressed with a range of error e.g. 5500+/-100 bc. This is because the process of deriving a date from a sample comes with a probability factor of it being correct or incorrect of 68%. So the date 5500+/-1000 bc (5400 - 5600) has a 68% probability (just over 2 in 3) of being correct but also has a 1 in 3 chance of being wrong. In order to improve the likelihood of it being correct the standard deviation (in my example 100) can be doubled to obtain a 95% probability of the date range being correct. So instead of a range of 5400-5600 bc which has a 68% chance of being correct we have a date range of 5300-5700 bc, which has a 95% chance of being correct. Although this is not always a problem for prehistorians it is not particularly helpful where greater granularity of time is required!

Unfortunately life is never simple, and the radiocarbon dates being produced using Libby’s system on samples of known dates obtained from tree-ring dating (dendrochronology) were found to be too young. The effect was increased over time, so that some prehistoric dates were between 800 and 900 years too recent. The cause of the problem was that Libby had not realized that the concentration of C14 in the atmosphere has not remained constant throughout time - it has fluctuated. The answer to the problem lay in an unlikely place - the Bristlecone Pine. This specie of tree has been used to build up tree ring sequences, which provide accurate dendro-chronological dates back for a 5000 year period. By dating samples with a known date scientists were able to determine when and to what degree the carbon 14 fluctuations occurred and then use that data to work out a correction curve whereby radiocarbon dates could be calibrated by reference to the dendro dates.

These calibration curves look simple when you see them on paper but in practice they are far from straight forward, due to the inbuilt probability distribution of radiocarbon dates mentioned above. To produce a correctly calibrated date range requires the use of a highly specialized and complex statistical technique called Bayesian statistics (named after the man who developed it). The calculations required are so complex that they must be carried out by a computer programme. A number of programmes now exist, with some of them freely available online (e.g. OxCal). The uncalibrated radiocarbon date together with its probability range, are fed into the programme which then makes a calculation to produce a date which is expressed without a deviation. Instead, the calibrated dates are expressed as a possible range between two dates e.g. 4900-3400 BC.

Radiocarbon dates can be expressed BP or BC/BCE. BP is Before the Present, the present having been set for practical purposes at 1950. BC (Before Christ) and BCE (Before Calendar Era (the politically correct version of BC) both refer to the time before the modern calendar begins - the year 0. Hence 100BC is approximately 2108 years ago, whereas 100BP would only be AD 1850. In fact, historians wouldn’t use BP because their dates are much more fine-grained, but it was just easy to use it to illustrate the point!

But of course there is the complication of having uncalibrated dates and calibrated dates. Either can be used in publications, and sometimes both are shown. This has lead to considerable confusion. Fekri Hassan expresses it very well in his book Droughts Food and Culture: “One of the key methodological issues hampering interdisciplinary communication and correlation of environmental and cultural data is the lack of standardization in reporting radiocarbon dating” (2002 p.8).

In my undergraduate days the uncalibrated dates were expressed in lower case as bp and bc, whereas the calibrated dates were expressed BC and BP. This is somewhat error prone, so nowadays a more popular method is to express uncalibrated dates BC or BP and calibrated ones Cal BC or Cal BP. If you’re lucky your author will explain which conventions he or she is using at the beginning of the publication, but most don’t. I think that for those new to prehistory this is the main source of confusion - between bp, bc, BP, BC, Cal BP and Cal BC there is a lot of space for serious confusion - and it creeps into one or two publications in the form of typographical and editing errors. In his above-mentioned book Hassan is good enough to provide a list of standard abbreviations used in the text and a conversion table of radiocarbon age estimates, which are immensely useful. He also indicates which calibration programme that he used, which in this case was Stuiver and Reimer‘s Calib 3.0.3c programme. But Professor Hassan is the exception, not the rule.

Just to add to the fun there is now a new form of radiocarbon dating called Accelerator Mass Spectrometry carbon 14 dating. This is a refined version of radiocarbon dating and offers the same benefits of ordinary radiocarbon dating but has the massive benefit or requiring a much smaller sample.

Finally, radiocarbon dates are only as good as the people handling and interpreting them. There are a number of points in the life of a sample where its value can diminish - for example, in errors made in the laboratory analysis, and contamination from other samples. Background cosmic radiation can also impact the value of a sample. For this reason it is rarely wise to depend upon one radiocarbon date. In order for a site to be dated securely a range of dates should, in an ideal world, be taken. These give additional statistical validity to a date range, and any anomalies will show up quite clearly - the Nabta Playa dates are a good example of this. In the Nabta reports there are so many dates taken at sites in the area that the anomalies tend to show up quite clearly.

I mentioned at the beginning of this treatise (I had no idea that it would be so long when I sat down to type it on my lunch break two weeks ago) that there are other types of absolute / scientific dating technique available. These are usually used when radiocarbon dates are impractical - either because there are no organic remains present or because the date range of the site falls outside that for which radiocarbon is useful. I don’t want to completely overload anyone who was mad enough to get this far, but I thought that a couple of examples might be of use/interest.

Thermoluminescence dating (usually just abbreviated to TL) is used for dating fired clays - like pottery. It can be used to date items and baked clay layers from the present until 400,000 years ago but it is relatively unreliable when compared with radiocarbon dating so it is only used in circumstances when radiocarbon dating is unavailable I.e. when there are no organic remains or when the site is over 40,000 years old. Clay contains quartz crystals which experience radioactive decay which builds up to create an electrical charge. This charge builds up at a known rate. When an item made of clay is exposed to heat under lab conditions the light is released and this can be measured to calculate the length of time since it was fired (I.e. the tie at which the light was first released).

Potassium Argon dating (usually abbreviated to K-Ar) is similar in principle to TL. It is only of use with very old samples - 200,000 to several millions of years ago. But its other major limitation is that it requires the right sort of geological formations and can therefore be used only in certain parts of the planet. Rock crystals contain potassium, which produces the gas argon as it decays. Examination and measurement under laboratory conditions can reveal when the crystal was formed. It is only of use where rock lies above and/or below a sample to give an approximate date, a Terminus Ante Quem (a date after which) or a Terminus Post Quem (a date before which).

Uranium Series is potentially useful for obtaining dates from calcium-rich samples like teeth, shells and calcium carbonate deposits (stalagmites or stalactites or stalagmitic floors, generically and colloquially termed “stal”). Again it operates by knowing the decay rate of isotopes - in this case U235 and U238, which are water soluable and produce thorium and protactinium. It needs a high content of uranium in the sample to be of any use.

If anyone desperately wants me to explain how Pharaonic Egyptian chronology has evolved let me know and I’ll do a piece on that too, but not until after Bloomsbury.

Covering the mummies: summary of discussion and Museum response

Many thanks to all of you who contributed to the discussion on the covering of the mummies at the Manchester Museum in April 2008. Below is a summary of the main issues raised and the Museum’s response. Apologies for the length of the posting!

The discussion on the blog, http://egyptmanchester.wordpress.com in response to the posting on 6th May 2008, ‘Covering the mummies’ where the covering of Asru, Khary and the child mummy was explained, has been lively, generating around 150 responses, and covering a number of different issues pertinent to the display of human remains in museums. This posting is now archived, as an update on the decisions regarding the display of the mummies has been more recently posted, but the original posting is still generating occasional responses.

(I) General consensus

The overwhelming majority (c. 85%) of people have expressed the opinion that they would like the mummies to be uncovered and to remain on display. A strong thread running through this viewpoint has been that museum visitors should be able to make the choice as to whether they view human remains, and not have that decision made for them. A simple solution iterated by many has been to put up a sign indicating that there are human remains on display, in order to allow visitors to make the choice about viewing them. Related to the feeling that visitors should have the opportunity to make their own minds up has been the expression of disappointment that the Manchester Museum appeared to make the decision to experimentally cover the three mummies without waiting until the end of a clearly designated consultation period. One of the suggestions that has been made in a number of postings is that the bodies could be covered but the face, hands, and feet revealed, as is done in Egyptian museums, in order to allow the bodies to retain their dignity, as well as their humanity.

The minority in favour of covering the mummies, or removing them from view, has praised the Museum for being experimental and courageous, and suggested that displaying the mummies, especially if uncovered, disregards the wishes of the ancient Egyptians.

Museum response:

The recent covering of three of the Egyptian mummies on display was in response to a small number of visitor complaints, and which triggered an experiment in ways of displaying the mummies. The response to the covering has revealed that a greater number of people prefer to be able to view the mummies, and the Museum is taking this into account.

On Monday 4th August 2008, Khary is being uncovered, Asru’s face and feet will be uncovered, and the child mummy will be removed from display – this mummy is a loan and will return to its own institution some time soon.

The Manchester Museum utilises consultation to inform its activities, and is commissioning research into visitor responses to displaying (Egyptian) human remains on the galleries as part of the ongoing consultation process on displaying the dead. The issue of choice as to whether visitors view the mummies on display or not has been addressed by installing panels at either end of the Egyptian galleries that indicate the presence of human remains, and offering an alternative route bypassing the galleries. Until the galleries are redeveloped, a route through the galleries avoiding the human remains entirely is not possible.

Architect treads softly in shadows of history

For an architect, it's tough enough designing a huge facility covering 15 acres and housing a cavernous underground garage, a posh hotel and hundreds of thousands of square feet of office and retail space.

But to map out a $730 million, 8.1 million-square-foot business and tourist complex adjacent to one of the most historic Islamic sites in Egypt?

That can pose real headaches:

* Plenty of bureaucratic red tape.

* Top Egyptian officials and archaeologists who charged initially the project would blemish Cairo's skyline and threaten views of nearby historic sites.

* UNESCO officials from Paris who wanted several levels lopped off the complex, saying an Italian architectural firm's design was too tall.

These were the kind of thorny issues architects at Denver-based Ohlson Lavoie Collaborative had to consider while drafting and revising a proposed design for the Cairo Financial Center.

which opened a Cairo office in 1999 - won the contract this year after besting rivals with its design plan.

Before OLC, five architectural firms had worked on the controversial Cairo Financial Center complex. It was proposed more than a decade ago. Construction work on a different, now- scrapped design had begun.

For OLC, which designed Glendale's Infinity Park rugby stadium, the deal is the firm's biggest ever. It also represents one of Egypt's biggest industrial projects.

A Cairo newspaper article suggested the financial center could allow Egypt to rival the booming Persian Gulf state of Dubai as a Middle East business hub.

To land the deal, OLC architects had to ensure their design wouldn't "humble" the nearby medieval fortress known as the Citadel, situated at the foot of Cairo's Mokattam Hill. The big 12th century structure houses a famed mosque and is one of the most visible landmarks on Cairo's skyline. A top Egyptian official has likened the Citadel to "Egypt's fourth pyramid."

The Giza guru

The Minot Daily News

Mark Lehner said his North Dakota upbringing helped him fulfill his dreams and goals with a career in uncovering ancient mysteries in Egypt.

Lehner, who grew up in Minot, is considered one of the foremost experts on the Giza Pyramids in Egypt.

He spoke Thursday night in Minot High School Central Campus Auditorium, a school where he was once a student. His presentation was part of activities being held for the 40th reunion of his MHS Class of 1968. Many of his classmates attended the presentation.

Lehner has worked in Egypt for 30 years. Since the 1980s, he has directed the Giza Plateau Mapping Project.

Lehner said what took him from the prairie of North Dakota, more specifically Minot, to Egypt was his yearning for "something more" and to learn about ancient Egypt.

Many people - family, friends, classmates and colleagues in Minot - have given him inspiration, he said. His mother, the late Ethel Lehner, was one of the main people to provide him with much inspiration and encouragement to venture forward, he said.

Buried birds teach students a lesson in mummification

Kim Coelho’s students found themselves on the hunt for mummies Friday, the last day of school.

They were only Cornish game hens, but they had been treated like royalty.

Friday was nearly six months after the sixth-grade history class treated three — then edible — Cornish game hens with the preservation and burial techniques used for Egyptian pharaohs. To finish the experiment, the students dug up the fowl buried in the Draper Middle School courtyard.

Amazingly, the birds didn’t look much different from how they were when the class first interred them. Once unwrapped, the birds appeared free of decay, though they had grown a bit darker and smelled distinctly of the spices the students had bathed them in.

“This is why the Egyptians did this, to preserve the bodies,” Coelho reminded her students.

Students spent parts of two months preparing the birds in the same manner Egyptians did more than four millennia ago. Coelho introduced the hands-on approach toward the subject to attract her class to a subject matter she previously taught from a textbook.

The class used a mixture of salt and baking soda to draw moisture from the birds and help limit any pungent aroma. They also bathed the birds in oil and spices.


A New Explanation of King Tutankhamen’s Death

ABSTRACT: Recent unwrapping and computerized tomographic studies of the mummy of King Tutankhamen confirm major anomalies as compared to other royal mummies. Most notable is the excision of a large segment of the anterior thorax by the embalmers. This unique feature was probably required by the condition of the corpse. The most likely explanation is that Tut sustained a crushing injury to the chest. An incidental distal femur fracture occurring shortly before death was also noted. How these findings would impact the embalming process is discussed along with the reasoning why the most likely cause of all postulated injuries would be due to the kick of a horse.

Controversy and speculation have abounded since the original autopsy of King Tutankhamen revealed he was just a youth when he died. The recent uncovering and computerized tomographic (CT) scanning of the mummy of King Tutankhamen provide evidence of multiple anomalies in the preparation of his mummy compared to other royal mummies of the era. These include:

  • entry to the skull through the foramen magnum as well as the nose to extract the brain
  • removal of the sternum and adjacent rib portions and overlying skin
  • absence of a heart scarab and NO heart present
  • use of a transverse unsutured abdominal incision to extract abdominal viscera
  • replacement of all viscera including kidneys with resin soaked linen packing
  • absence of an embalmers wedjat eye plate over the incision
  • placement of the lower arms across the abdomen rather than crossed over the chest

Like Satchel Paige, Universal Studios seemed keenly aware of the dangers of looking back. Something, of course, might have been gaining on them. Full speed ahead it was, then, for their popular horror films of the early 1930s, as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Old Dark House, and The Mummy all saw release in either 1931 or 1932. All those but the first starred Boris Karloff, the former William Henry Pratt of London, England, and an iconic horror star who truly suffered for his art in the form of tedious make-up sessions at the hands of Jack Pierce. The two men, artist and model, probably remain most responsible for the continued, decades-long success of the horror film-cum-romance The Mummy. Trying to associate the film with anything besides the intricately layered, sandswept crust of Pierce's foundation worn by Karloff seems unimaginable.

If the image of Karloff in character isn't already ingrained in first-time viewers' memories from clips and promotional materials, it will be after watching the film's first twelve minutes. Still unsettling, if not terrifying, after all these years, these initial moments are the closest the film gets to traditional horror conventions. The opening is 1921, at an Egyptian tomb obviously inspired by the heavily publicised Tutankhamen dig from that year. British Museum archaeologists are in the midst of a mummified Imhotep, standing upright in a wooden coffin. Despite uncovering a scroll that specifically warns against doing exactly what they do, the men inadvertently revitalise the dead. The unfortunate witness is Norton (Bramwell Fletcher), who's all alone when Karloff's Imhotep comes to life with eerie realism. Viewers see a completely made-up Karloff, in full mummy wrap, slowly open his eyes. Then it's a creeping hand. This mummy isn't seen walking or even barely moving. The final shot of the unearthed creature is merely a few strips of cloth bandages as Norton laughs maniacally. It's a memorable, amazingly effective sequence, directed and lit by the legendary German cinematographer Karl Freund.

What follows veers far closer to a tortured romance than a horror film. The year changes to 1932 and a fez-wearing gentleman who looks suspiciously like Boris Karloff comes calling on the current expedition. He identifies himself as Ardath Bey. As we learn, his death was tortuous and involved his love for Princess Anck-es-en-Amon, who's apparently been reincarnated as Helen Grosvenor (Zita Johann) in present-day 1932. Bey/Imhotep aims to relieve his once and future paramour of her earthly existence so that they can again be together.



Daily Photo - Clothing from the Petrie Museum

The daily photo slot is hearby resumed, with my thanks to the Petrie who gave me the go-ahead to use their online database to make sure that I have sufficient material to update the blog with photographs on a daily basis. Thankfully, their descriptions mean that all the hard work has already been done!

KV10 and KV63 project updates

Otto Schaden has updated Jane regarding both his own health and the plans for the sites KV10 and KV63 in the Valley of the Kings. The team, now affiliated with the of the SCA, are hoping to resume work this winter. Have a look at Jane's site, above, for the full story but here's an extract from his update:

The major emphasis will be the resumption of work on the artifacts from KV-63, including restoration and conservation work on the coffins, examinations of the sealed storage jars and special studies involving plant and textile remains. The amount of materials is considerable and it will be necessary to have an additional season after 2008/2009. As of now we still do not know the extent of the contents of the remaining unopened storage jars. The contents of those jars will, in large measure, determine what specialists may have to be added next time.

Culture Minister opens the renovated Egyptian Museum in Turin

Minister of Culture Farouq Hosni returned home Thursday 31/7/2008 from Turin city, wrapping up a several days' visit to Italy during which he opened the renovated Egyptian Museum in Turin (Museo Egizio Di Torino).

On Tuesday 29/7/2008, Italian Culture Minister Sandro Bondi proclaimed 2009 as a year of the Egyptian culture in Italy. He also expressed keenness of both Italy and Egypt on activating culture agreements signed between the two countries.

For his part, Hosni said a major cultural ceremony will be held in mid-2009 to open the restored building of the Egyptian arts academy in Rome.

In statements Hosni said the ceremony will also mark the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the academy. The Egyptian academy is the only Arab facility among 17 foreign academies in the Italian capital, he said. The minister, described the academy restoration project as an architectural feat. For his part, the academy's director Ashraf Reda said that the project includes setting up a museum for Egyptian artifacts to be the first of its kind in Rome.

Database of Early Dynastic inscriptions

The current database (which will be accessible to the general public soon) assembles all available Early Dynastic inscriptions, covering the first attestations of writing discovered in tomb U-j (Naqada IIIA1, ca. 3250 BC) until the earliest known continuous written text in the reign of Netjerikhet–more commonly known as Djoser (ca. 2700 BC). The database originated as a computerized Access document containing the collection of sources on which the author’s Ph.D. dissertation “A Palaeographic Study of Early Writing in Egypt” was based. The latter was kindly reformed into a web compatible application by Prof. Erhart Graefe, head of the Department of Egyptology and Coptology at the University of Münster, Germany. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to him.

The database contains 4524 inscriptions. Each inscription was assigned a source number. The source list, published by J. Kahl in Das System der ägyptischen Hieroglyphenschrift in der 0.-3. Dynastie, 171-417, was the point of departure. His sources dated to the later part of the Third Dynasty, after the reign of Netjerikhet/Djoser, were left out since they were not part of the initial Ph.D. study. The sequence of the Kahl list is chronological but this could not be followed when new sources were added as they were found. About 700 sources could be added to his collection starting from number 4000 onwards. Multiple impressions from the same cylinder seal were incorporated as one source since they are copies of one inscription.

The database furthermore includes detailed information regarding date, provenance, type of inscription, dating criterion, and present depository.

Chronological information

The date is indicated by period –for example “dyn. 1”– and/or by the reign of the king when this is known. The starting point of the palaeographic survey was tomb U-j at Umm el-Qa‘ab since it contained the earliest known attestations of writing in Egypt. This tomb has been dated to stage IIIA1 of Hendrickx’s system, ca. 3250 BC, thought to be between a century and a century and a half before the beginning of the First Dynasty. The duration of the period in between, occasionally referred to as “Dynasty 0” and corresponding to Hendrickx’s Naqada IIIA-B period, cannot yet be assessed with any degree of accuracy. There is a whole series of anonymous rulers, known from lavish burials or inscribed material, although there is some dispute about the reading of their names. It seems, therefore, more feasible and appropriate to restrict the term “dynasty” to the First and Second Dynasty when rulers can be identified with more certainty, and when a certain degree of historical and political continuity can be observed. We will refer to the more specific Naqada phases when dealing with inscriptions from the time before the reign of Narmer.

In doing so, we follow the relative chronology of Hendrickx as far as the Naqada phases are concerned and Kahl’s System der ägyptischen Hieroglyphenschrift regarding the succession of kings. More recent revisions since the latter work are referred to in a footnote.

It is a good year for those who are interested in the 18th Dynasty. Stan Parchin reports on a new exhibition in Switzerland:

Ancient Egypt's tumultuous Amarna Period is described in "Akhenaten and Nefertiti: Sun and Shadows of the Pharaohs" at Geneva, Switzerland's Musées d'art et d'histoire.

Akhenaten and Nefertiti: Sun and Shadows of the Pharaohs at Geneva, Switzerland's Musées d'art et d'histoire (October 17, 2008-February 1, 2009) explains the relation of art, religion and power during the reign of ancient Egypt's "heretic" pharaoh.

Exhibition: Examining the relationship between Egypt and Rome

A sweeping new exhibition in a legendary Rome venue explores the centuries-old love affair between the two ancient civilizations of Egypt and Rome.

The exhibit at Castel Sant'Angelo, features a host of artefacts exploring the development of ties between the land of the Nile and Rome, from the first century BC through to the Age of the Enlightenment. The show takes as its starting point the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, which marked the defeat of the combined forces of Mark Anthony and Cleopatra at the hands of Octavian. Following this defeat, Egyptian treasures began flowing into Rome, starting with the first obelisks, a number of which are still standing today. This marked the beginning of a fascination with the Ancient Egyptian civilization, which would endure for centuries to come. It shaped the development of culture in Rome through Humanism, the Renaissance, the Baroque and the Enlightenment, by which time the Eternal City itself had faded to a remnant of its former power and glory. The exhibit opens by comparing a series of depictions of historical figures in Egyptian and Classical Roman style, with busts of the emperors Nero and Domitian. There are also several representations of Antinous, a beautiful young man beloved of Hadrian, who drowned in the Nile and was deified by the emperor after his death.
