The very last on the New 7 Wonders

IOL

Egypt has one last dig at the contest:

Egypt said on Sunday that the pyramids of Giza remained the only wonder of the world, snubbing a contest in which seven "new" wonders were selected by Internet and telephone voters as having "no value."Seven new wonders of the world, including the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal in India, were selected at a star-studded event in Lisbon Saturday after nearly 100 million voters made their choice out of a list of 21 sites."This contest will not detract from the value of the pyramids, which is the only real wonder of the world," Egypt's antiquities supremo Zahi Hawass told AFP.He said the competition "has no value," because "the masses do not write history."

And the BBC News site has provided a very short but coherent summary of the contest, again listing the winners, but also adding a note about some concerns regarding the enterprise:

The campaign has been some six years in the making. But the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) - which has long had its own World Heritage List - has criticised the organisation's approach. Unesco argues that the list is very limited. Its own World Heritage List numbers sites including 660 cultural and 166 natural.

Success in the competition will not be popular with everyone. Archaeologists said the Mayan ruins, at Chichen Itza in south-eastern Mexico could be hit by an avalanche of additional visitors and that the extra wear and tear could force authorities to limit the tourist traffic.
