I understand that the hotel is being subjected to a major decorative overhaul by its latest owners (Sofitel), and perhaps when this is complete they will address some of their basic service issues.

I'm so glad you mentioned this. I visit Egypt every year and have never suffered such ridiculous, pompous snobbery as I did when visiting the Old Cataract. The staff were simply rude. Give me the rather delightful Nile Palace at Luxor any day!
The staff at the Old Cataract were a small cloud on an otherwise extremely enjoyable holiday. Trying to get served was a nightmare, and even though my breaking-point volcanic eruption in the middle of the Nile Terrace resulted in free beers and coffees for an afternoon, I would rather just have paid my way and enjoyed a relaxing few hours watching the Nile go by. We were there for a week, and I loved the hotel itself, and its views, but the service let it down completely. Andie
By the way, if you find yourself in Aswan don't miss out on the bookshop in the New Cataract Hotel - I picked up some super new AUC books and an excellent selection of second hand treasures that I've not seen anywhere else. Andie
This blog was set up in 2004 to aggregate news about Egyptology and related topics from online sources on a regular basis. It was closed finally in September 2013 due to other commitments. It has been left open as an archive, but comments have been disabled.
Kindest regards to all Andie andie {at} oddthing.co.uk
