It's staggering how often mummies and pyramids and Ramses and hieroglyphs and Zawi Hawass, the camera-happy Egyptian in charge of ancient antiquities there, are the subject of movies. But this routine documentary still captures some of what so captivates us about this culture that sought ways, spiritual and physical, to cheat death.
The recreations are vivid, if not the best-acted things you'll ever see. It's fascinating to remember the 19th century search for that first intact royal mummy and the treasure trove of coffins packed into that first long-hidden tomb. The movie rambles across not just a history of mummification, but of the building boom of Ramses the Great and the breakthrough that allowed translations of hieroglyphs, thus opening the door on what was missing from all those big, robbed empty tomb chambers.
