I was absolutely knocked to read on the EEF newsletter this morning that Bastiaan died just after Christmas, of a heart attack. We were occasional correspondents, exchanging information about Egyptology topics and my blog. The last time we chatted, on the subject of a bronze plaque in the BM, he teased me about my frequent dashes to north Wales, saying he lost kilos every time I left. He was a light in many people's lives. I simply cannot say how truly sad I am. He will be remembered with much warmth. My sympathies to his family and close friends.

I was mostly moved too by the death of this person, though I never met him. He helped me however a couple of years ago when I was planning my study in Germany,,,,,I kept thinking always that I will visit Holland soon to see him eventually and thank him deeply,,,,but then I saw the sad news,,,,it is a planned meeting that never happened,,,,
Dear May
I received many emails after I posted this, and so many people said the same thing - that they had never met Bastiaan, but that he had helped them, and that he had become important to them. His friend John tells me that he died very peacefully, with an Egyptology book on his lap and a cup of tea near to hand. I too wish very much that I had had the chance to meet him.
