Daily Photo - Karnak

Fred Sierevogel sent me this photograph and asked me to identify it, but I'm afraid I cannot be of much help. The statue is located in the Great Hypostyle Hall of Karnak and shows the deity Amun accompanied by a second figure whose head is missing.

I cannot find out if the statue is contemporary with the Hypostyle Hall or was placed there at a later stage. Nor can I find out for sure if there are any inscriptions on it. I've looked at all my books and had a hunt around the web but I've found nothing conclusive. It is all too easy to eat up the hours trying to find out this sort of information! If anyone has any useful information on the subject I'll update this post.

I really need to get back to Luxor in the next year or so and spend some serious time at Karnak!

According to the book "The Boy Behind The Mask" by Charlotte Booth (2007), this is an image of Tutankhamun and Akhsenamun as Amun and Mut - but it is apparently at Luxor Temple not Karnak.

That's interesting - I had seen a reference to a Tutankhamun inscription, but I wasn't sure if they referred to this particular statue (it was difficult to tell from the photograph). But the books I have show the statue at Karnak. Thanks for the feedback.

At:

there is a mention of two pair statues of Amun and Mut situated on the South side of the processional collenade of Amenhotep III. My only concern is that the website mentions they are seated - that one looks like it is standing.

Thanks to Bob Wickland as well - he says that the statue is at Karnak just inside the 2nd pylon on the left as you enter the hypostyle hall and that it is one in the same series as the two groups at Luxor temple. Bob says that they were made by Tutankhamun probably to replace ones destroyed by Akhenaten and were all usurped by Rameses II.
