Undergraduate study of Albert Hetherington collection

Winnipeg Free Press

Maureen Babb is a real archeologist, unlike the movie character she dismisses as a grave robber who doesn't even bother to take decent scholarly notes. . . .

Babb is among 1,050 students who will receive their undergraduate degrees at today's spring convocation. Another 17 students will receive their master's degrees.

Babb has been poring over the Hetherington Collection, U of W's 300 artifacts brought back by former dean of divinity Albert Hetherington from Egypt more than 80 years ago.

"It's a collection held in the University of Winnipeg since it was Wesley College," she said. "All we knew prior to my research was, they were Egyptian, and came to the university in the early 20th century."

Babb has confirmed that the artifacts were obtained in Egypt between 1924 and 1927, in the city of Abydos, during an authorized dig supervised by archeologist Henri Frankford. They date from 1070 to 31 B.C.
