KMT Winter 2008/09

KMT Journal

As usual I've missed the fact tha KMT has been published. I wish that someone at KMT would let me know when the newest issue is released! Fortunately I was at Borders the other day (book shop) and happened to see it nestling snuggly on a shelf, so here's a summary of the contents.

  • Royal In-Laws, Yuya & Thuyu, except from Imperial Lives, Vol. 2 by Dennis Forbes
  • Alexander Henry Rhind’s Mid-19th Century Excavations at Sheikh Abd el Gurnaby Aidan Dodson
  • Fakes & Forgeries in the Egyptian Collection of Chicago’s Oriental Institute by Emily Teeter
  • Ancient Egyptian Art at Lisbon’s Calouste Gulbenkian Museum by Lucy Gordan-Rastelli
  • Photo Essay: Up the Unas Causeway by Dennis Forbes

Plus “Nile Currents” & “For the Record,” as well as reviews of: The Laughter of Dead Kings, a novel by Elizabeth Peters; The Encylcopedia of the Egyptian Pharaohs by Darrell D. Paker; Mummy Portraits from Roman Egypt by Paul Roberts; The British Museum Dictionary of Ancient Egypt by Ian Shaw & Paul Nicholson; From Egypt to Babylon: The International Age, 1550-500 BC by Paul Collins; Food Fit for Pharaohs: An Ancient Egyptian Cookbook by Michell Berriedale-Johnson; Daily Life in Ancient Egypt: Recreating Lahun by Kasia Szpakowska; Egyptian Scarabs by Richard H. Wilkinson; Unearthing Ancient Egypt by Miroslav Verner & Hana Benesovaska; The Eternal Light of Egypt by Sarite Sanders; To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures from the Booklyn Museum by Edward Bleiberg; & The Royal Mummies: Immortality in Ancient Egypt by Francois Janot

I would be a subscriber, by the way, if they would introduce Paypal online purchasing, but the only way of ordering is to print off the order form, fill in your credit card details (or send a cheque), and post it to them using snail mail. As long as Borders stays afloat that will continue being my solution to the problem!

Why is putting a cheque in the post so difficult? I've subscribed to KMT this way for years and there is never a problem!

Where have you been, the winter issue has been out since November?

I'm with you Andie, KMT doesn't make it easy, especially if you don't have checks or creditcard. Luckily you can get a copy at Borders, I've never seen it here in Holland :-(((

The anonymous comment "Where have you been", is horribly insensitive to regular readers of this blog. Andie lost both her mother and grandmother in December. Other things on her mind besides a trip to the bookstore to buy KMT.

Andie -

As a die hard KMT purchaser, I have learned their typical M.O. The subscribers get the issue in the month before the solstice/equinox in question (ie Winter arrives in November). As for the store availability, they are usually up by the first of the month that the new season falls on (ie Winter on December 1).

Of course, you are across the pond from me, so I have no idea when subscribers or stores get their issues. The Website is usually updated around the same time US stores get the issues.

I do wish that people would cease to be anonymous, because I always feel so silly writing "Dear Anonymous" but hello to all two/three of you. Hi to Ingeborg and Rhio - great to hear from you guys as usual.

First, I don't have the right sort of cheque book to just write a cheque and lob it in the post to the U.S.. I'd have to arrange something, and as with so many things in life I find that I have more interesting things to do than run around organizing payment solutions.

Second, in an age where the web makes online payments so very simple it would just be convenient to click a button and sort it out so easily. I am always surprised that management teams who wish to increase income don't make it as easy as possible for people to part with their money.

I'll remember the tip about the dates when KMT usually comes out - thanks for that.

Good luck with finding KMT in Holland, Ingeborg! I can't think of anything to suggest unless one of the museums stocks it.

Thanks Rhio. Yes, December was more than a little distracting.

Thanks as usual for all the feedback.

Andie

Andie - Sorry for not posting my name. My name is Aaron. I do have a blogger account, but I can't sign into it while I am at work. I will start to sign my name more when I post here. Especially when I post fairly often.

I was the 3rd "Anonymous".

I totally agree with your position on companies making things easy to purchase online. KMT has always been behind the times technologically. They used to have a terrible website with no information until a year ago. Now the website is fantastic, but no way to subscribe if you want to.

I understand that they are planning to start online subscriptions here soon. Their balance sheet will look all the better for it if they do!

Re: the "Anonymous" signers;

I don't have a blogger account, but I just check the name/url option and leave the url blank....

Works perfectly ;-)))

I'm another occasional KMT reader who would subscribe if there were an online option. I made enquiries about this 10 years ago! I'm certain KMT would increase its revenue if it were possible to buy online. As for Borders, whenever I am in the London stores the copies are usually sold out so its pot luck really. In the meantime the UK Ancient Egypt magazine is improving greatly, and it is proving to be a valid alternative.
