From MoMA to RISD with new perspective, ideas

The Providence Journal (Linda Borg)

Sarah Ganz Blythe is all about technology, which makes her a perfect fit for the Rhode Island School of Design as it is being remade by its new president, John Maeda.

Blythe was just hired as the RISD Museum’s director of education, where her primary mission is to bring the museum’s impressive art collection to the public and bring the public to the museum, which recently opened a sleek glass addition on North Main Street called the Chace Center. She succeeds Ray Williams, who left about a year ago. . . .

The museum is already moving toward reinstalling its fentire collection around themes rather than art forms. Egyptian art will now be integrated with the rest of the Ancient World collection. By incorporating painting, fashion, furniture and text, the museum’s new 20th century exhibit provides a much richer picture of what ideas shaped modern art.

Blythe is also brainstorming ways to make the museum’s 84,000-piece collection more accessible to the city’s public schools.
