Photo for Today by Francis Lankester

Thanks to J.D. DEGREEF for the following information about the above photograph which shows
Third Dynasty Horus Sekhemkhet (not Den as the caption read previously).
The serekhs have been vandalised since their publication by W.M.F. Petrie in his Researches in Sinai, 1906, fig. 47 p. 42.
The existence of Sekhemkhet was only discovered in the 1950's (from objects in an unfinished step pyramid at Saqqara), so the name was originally read as that of the Firstst Dynasty king Semer-khet.

Not Den (1st dyn.) but the Horus Sekhem-khet (3d dyn.). The serekhs have been vandalised since the publication by PETRIE, Researches in Sinai, 1906, fig. 47 p. 42. The existence of Sekhemkhet was only discovered in the 1950's (objects in an unfinished step pyramid at Saqqara), so the name was originally read as that of the 1st dyn. king Semer-khet.
