This is a magical mystery Daily Photo. I took these photographs in 2002 at a temple somewhere near the entrance to the Wadi Hammamat, travelling from Luxor. I have looked on the Web and in various books, but I cannot find anything to confirm precisely which temple this was. My original information was that this was the Temple of Min at Qift (Koptos) but now I'm not so sure for various reasons.
We were something of a tourist attraction ourselves when we got there - a huge number of children gathered to look at us from a safe distance, and we got the distinct impression that the site was only infrequently visited - in fact, if memory serves, the site had to be opened specially for us, and was fairly well littered with rubbish. It was overlooked by buildings immediately adjancent to the site.
It's not a lot to go on, but I think that these images are distinctive enough for anyone who knows the site to be able to identify it. Anyone who can sort my head out on this one will earn my everlasting gratitude! It is driving me nuts. You can get me by email: a.byrnes@ucl.ac.uk.

Hi Andie, I can't believe it but the job you are doing here just gets better and batter.
ReplyDeleteYou 3rd pic here - the legs - is from the Ptolemaic gateway at Qus. See
http://www.touregypt.net/featurestories/qiftkoptos.htm toward the bottom of the page. The pic there is of the inner gateway just opposite yours. The last pic looks familiar but I'm not sure if it is also Qus.
