Restoration of Hanging Church nearing completion

Egypt State Information Service

"The restoration of the Hanging Church in Old Cairo is about to complete,"said Culture Minister Farouk.

Some 96 percent of the works have been finished," Hosni told reporters. "It has cost the ministry so far LE55 million," he added.

Head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Zahi Hawwas said that Russian experts will arrive in Cairo next week to help restore rare icons. The restoration works started in 1999, basically to save the historical church from underground water.

If you're interested seeing in a virtual tour of the Hanging Church, there's an excellent Quick Time tour of the interior on Waleed Nassar's page on the World Wide Panorama website (sponsored by the Geography Computing Facility at the University of California Berkeley).
