I've just noticed that the series Chasing Mummies, which had such polarized reviews when it aired in the US, is starting on UK television tonight on Sky 3. I won't be in to watch it so I won't be reviewing it. Here's the Radio Times online summary:
Egyptologist Dr Zahi Hawass and his team supervise the restoration of the Step Pyramid, the oldest in Egypt, but a member of the fellowship program becomes trapped inside.

This is the stupidest show I've ever seen. He is a total tyrant in the thing. Totally not worth watching unless you want to laugh at it. I think I watched 3 shows. After the first one only because there was nothing else on at that time. HONEST
My condolences to the people of the U.K.!
!00% in agreement with the statements above. Not worth watching.
Oh no, you should watch it!! Big fun. E.g., you will never forget those psychopathical stares of a certain person, and hysterical phrases like "You will never work for me again!"
Yep, and then he turns around and takes one of the girls out to a night club. It was funny. My husband refused to sit in front of the TV when it was on. But I'll bet that anybody who watches the first one won't watch any more.
I watched it. Hawass comes across as a madman. There is no excuse for being so abusive. The young people in this series are all actors with only a marginal exposure to or interest in Egyptology. The contrived "plots" are pathetic. It was nice to see some of the excavations though, as I have never been to Egypt, but Hawass' insane behavior spoils it. It will be interesting to see if he remains in his position, in light of recent events!
Well, I watched the first one and I watched all the rest as well. This show was terrible, but I couldn't help watching to see if it would get even worse. I understand that showing what real fellows do and what Hawass's read day is like wouldn't have been interesting to the average viewer. So, we got the paid actors pretending to be fellows, the ridiculous situations contrived to make Zahi look good, etc. I think a show like this just shouldn't have been made at all.
I watched several of the Chasing Mummies episodes and must say that I agree with the above statements. I did, however, appreciate Hawass's odd fetish for being in constricted places--he dragged those girls and the camera up inside the layers of the King's Chamber in Khufu's pyramid, a place I was delighted to see but (being claustrophobic) will just never go. Just do what some of my friends did--use the show as the basis for a drinking game ;-)
